Bethany's Story: Getting a Handle on Her Cash

Bethany, she's 18, just finished her A-levels at Silverdale School here in Sheffield. Like a lot of young people her age, she found money a bit of a mystery. She had a part-time job at Meadowhall, earning decent money, but every penny seemed to vanish. Before she knew it, payday felt a million miles away, and her bank account was looking rather sad. It was a familiar story: spending on coffees, clothes from Fargate, nights out with mates in the city centre. She knew she wanted to go to uni, probably up in Newcastle, and needed to save, but had no idea how.

One evening, she saw a flyer for PoundWise Skills at her local youth club in Crookes. It promised "real money sense, no nonsense." She was a bit sceptical, thinking it would be full of boring lectures. But her friend, Liam, said he'd been and found it really helpful. So, Bethany decided to give our budgeting workshop a go. She figured what's the worst that could happen?

Our workshop isn't about telling you off. It's about practical steps. We started with tracking where her money actually went. Bethany was shocked to see how much she was spending on small, everyday bits and bobs. We talked about setting clear saving goals, making a simple weekly budget, and the difference between 'must-haves' and 'nice-to-haves'. We even looked at simple ways to manage her student overdraft when she eventually starts uni, which put her mind at ease.

It wasn't magic, but Bethany put the effort in. She started using a simple app we suggested to track her spending. Instead of buying lunch every day, she started packing her own a few times a week. Those little changes added up fast. Within a couple of months, she had a proper emergency fund building up and was actually putting money aside specifically for her uni living costs.

Bethany told us, "Before, I just felt stressed about money all the time. Now, I actually know where my cash is going, and I'm saving for university. It's such a relief. PoundWise Skills showed me it's not complicated, you just need a plan. Anyone who thinks they're rubbish with money should definitely come along." She's planning to study business, and we reckon she'll be brilliant at it, especially now she's got her own finances sorted.
